Coolcationing: Why Europe is Fleeing North

The summers of Central and Southern Europe have turned from scorching to suffocating. The summer of 2024 was the warmest in Europe’s recorded history, and in 2025, the record was broken again.

June 2026 pushed temperatures in Spain to 45.1 °C, while Germany, Denmark, and the UK set new all-time monthly records. The travel industry’s answer is “coolcationing” – cool plus vacation. This shift is not a passing trend; climate change is redrawing the map of where people spend their summers.

More and more travelers seeking genuine quality time are looking north toward something that used to be a given: air that is easy to breathe, nights when one can sleep peacefully.

The scale of this shift is clearly visible in booking data. Trip.com Group recorded a 74 percent year-over-year growth in searches for cooler destinations in the first half of 2026. According to a 2026 survey by Polarsteps, over a third of British travelers chose a cooler destination for their summer holiday, and more than a fifth did so for the first time. Travel data analysts at Mabrian and Data Appeal have highlighted Southern Finland as one of the clearest beneficiaries of this trend.

The Physiological Cost of Heat

When daytime temperatures rise above 30 °C and nights no longer cool below what climate scientists call “tropical” (over 20 °C), the human body begins to lose its ability to recover properly.

Sleep quality collapses. Falling asleep requires a drop in core body temperature. A hot bedroom prevents this drop. Sleep researchers place the ideal bedroom temperature between 15.5 and 19.4 °C – and most people sleep in environments warmer than this even without a heatwave.

At temperatures over 24 °C, the damage becomes measurable. An analysis published in the journal Nature Communications in 2025, based on over 23 million individual sleep records, showed that every 10 °C increase in ambient temperature increased the probability of insufficient sleep by just over 20%. The impact specifically affected the deep sleep phase.

In another study, researchers at the University of Copenhagen calculated that warmer nights already cost people an average of 44 hours of sleep per year globally. Researchers expect this figure to rise to 50–58 hours per year by the end of the century.

Heat stress. Constant heat strains the heart. It must simultaneously pump blood to working muscles and to the skin to expel excess heat. This double burden is partly why even a light hike or a bike ride can exhaust a fit and healthy person in severe heat.

A clinical study on nocturnal bedroom temperatures shows that heart rate and cardiovascular strain measurably increase as soon as the room temperature exceeds 24 °C. Blood diverted to the skin is drawn away from the digestive system, which is why appetite vanishes in intense heat.

None of this is theoretical in Southern Europe in the 2020s: a widely cited analysis in Nature Medicine linked over 62,700 deaths across Europe to the 2024 heatwaves alone, and the Spanish health monitoring system recorded 1,028 excess deaths in June 2026.

Artificial Cold

Southern hotels respond to the heat with air conditioning, which brings its own set of problems. Air conditioning removes moisture from the air, drying out the nose and throat during the night and further worsening the condition of guests prone to allergies or asthma.

The noise of the unit and the potential direct airflow cause micro-awakenings that fragment sleep. People wake up tired in the morning. And the windows remain closed. No bird song, no cooling night air flowing softly through the room, no scent of the forest or garden – just a closed box where the temperature is mechanically standardized.

The Statistical Advantage of the Finnish Summer

The climate of Southwest Finland offers a natural antidote to all three problems.

Average temperature. July is the warmest month in Finland. The inland river valleys of Southwest Finland and the Salo region, which includes Perniö, record some of the warmest daytime readings in the entire southwestern part of the country.

The Finnish weather service Foreca’s statistics show that the average daily high temperatures in Southern and Central Finland in July are 21–23 °C: warm enough for full-day outdoor activities, but cool enough so that the day does not become an ordeal.

Diurnal variation – the crown jewel of the North. After a sunny and warm summer day, the temperature in the north drops as evening falls. In the Turku and Helsinki regions, the average July night temperature is around 12–13 °C, and a 10–20 degree fluctuation between day and night is completely normal in the Finnish summer.

This drop in temperature is a natural signal the body was designed to react to. Finland is not entirely immune to warming either: a few tropical nights over 20 °C occur in most summers. But in Finland, they remain an exception. Around the Mediterranean, they are fast becoming the new summer normal.

As Southern European summers climb toward genuinely dangerous temperatures, a standard Finnish July begins to look more and more like the original ideal of what a summer holiday should feel like.
